Thanks, I am studying Film and Television Industries, I am currently writing a paper on why Star Wars in not as succesful at the box office in China like it is in other places. I don't know if you could help me and advise me where I could find information about this subject. Thanks again.
As a matter of fact, there ARE plenty of disscussion around this subject in China, it even became a major topic among the fans when The Force Awaken came out. But unfortunately, most of them were written in Chinese (If you like, you can get some information in Chinese fan website like Starwars china or Star Wars Baidu tieba , but I guess you may need to find someone who can read Simplified Chinese to help you first).
Here are some short articles (In english) about this subject I just found:
Hello again, I was wondering is there somewhere were I could find a comparison between Star Wars and other franchises like Avengers or Fast and the Furious like why are they more succesful than Satr Wars. Thanks again.
Hi again, per your request, I did some research for you on the network and local database. Sadly, although there are many articles and reports related to this topic, again, only a few of them were written in English:
Although the Star Wars series has gained a relatively high box office in China, it still cannot compare with the box office gained in the Western world. When Star Wars first came out in 1970s, for the people at that time, the spiritual need for popular culture was very large. Meanwhile, the development of science and film technology has made people interested in sci-fi. So, as a pop sci-fi movie, plus the most sophisticated visual effect at the time, Star Wars bacame a popular rapidly.
However, since the original trilogy of Star Wars hasn't been released in China mainland, it never truely became a part of popular culture. In addition, LucasFilm and 20th Century Fox didn't promote Star Wars franchise to the Chinese film market like Disney did then, which makes the series lost it's chance to get known by Chinese audiences earlier.
In 2010s, when Star Wars franchise has established a relatively small but stable fan base in China, other Sci-fi movies like The Transformers, Avatar, Marvel has occupied the market already, which makes Star Wars "another ordinary sci-fi movie series" for the audiences. The situation still didn't get better after the release of Episode VII and VIII due to the plot. Generally speaking, the Star Wars tells it's story in a form of epic film. So, instead of character relations, the film put much more effort to describe conflicts between ideas, politics and religious. These elements may draw western audiences' attention, but it doesn't work for Chinese audiences, as the culture in China is completely different from Western. In Chinese audiences' opinion, the story of Star Wars is lengthy, superficial and hard to understand, or like George Lucas himself said, just a bored space soap-opera.
Hello again, sorry for keep asking questions, but I read about douban. So I was wondering if you could help me translate some of the comments on this website about the recent Star Wars films or do you think that the google translator is accurate enough?
Also I forgot to ask is there a site where I can find the performance of movies depending their genre, from what I read comedy movies do better than sci fi movies in China I don't know if this is true.
OK, about your first question, I believe the Google translator can do it's job quite well, though you may find some details missing, and some words untranslatable. If you have trouble to understand some of the comments, you can post them here, I'll see what I can do to help.
As for the second question, I do know that Douban has a scoring system based on genre: 豆瓣电影排行榜 .
It's true that comedy movies have achieved great success in the last few years, but personally, I don't think that means they do better job than sci-fi movie in China. For example, The Wandering Earth, a Sci-fi movie that released in Chinese new year, has gained more than $700 million in a month, made the second best-selling movie in Chinese history (Which you can find some details here ).
